James Joyce: Master Class
Join Margot Norris the Chancellor's Professor Emerita of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine for a special Literary Luncheon Master Class on James Joyce and his classic novel Ulysses. This special class will only require you to read sections of the novel yet will give you a complete overview and understanding of the author and the importance of his work. The Master Class will be a new addition to the Literary Luncheon Series so that we can all delve more deeply into the works of authors that are often referenced in modern culture and literature. The class will include lecture, luncheon and discussion.
You may use any edition but please make sure that the text is a complete text.
The two chapters of Ulysses we will discuss:
Chapter 4: "Calypso" pp. 45-57 in the Gabler edition of Ulysses published by Vintage Books
Chapter 18: "Penelope" pp. 608-644 in the Gabler edition of Ulysses published by Vintage Books
Professor Norris also recommends the 1967 black and white film titled Ulysses by Joseph Strick.

ABOUT GUEST LECTURER MARGOT NORRIS:
Margot Norris is Chancellor's Professor Emerita of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine. She is a scholar of early twentieth-century literature with a special interest in the work of James Joyce. From 2004-2008 she served as President of the International James Joyce Foundation. Her books on Joyce include The Decentered Universe of 'Finnegans Wake' (1976), Joyce's Web (1992), Suspicious Readings of Joyce's 'Dubliners' (2003), and a monograph on the 1967 Joseph Strick film of Joyce's Ulysses. She has also edited two books on Joyce, including the 2006 Norton Critical Edition of Joyce's Dubliners. Her new book on Ulysses will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in December 2011. Its title is Virgin and Veteran Readings of 'Ulysses'.
